Write a Cover Letter That Actually Gets You Interviews

The 3-paragraph structure

Paragraph 1 — The hook (2 sentences)

Lead with the most relevant thing you've done. Not your years of experience. Not "I am writing to express my interest." The result.

"I've led QA across three enterprise rollouts — two SAP, one Salesforce — each delivered without a critical defect in production. When I saw this role, it looked like the same territory."

Paragraph 2 — The evidence (3-4 sentences)

Pick two or three requirements from the job description. Match each to a specific thing you did.

"Your listing mentions JIRA, Zephyr, and stakeholder reporting. In my last role I owned the test management toolchain — migrated us from manual spreadsheets to Zephyr Scale and built a weekly defect dashboard for the PM and CTO. I also ran the QA sign-off conversations directly with the business owner each sprint."

Paragraph 3 — The close (1-2 sentences)

Make the ask clearly. No fluff.

"I'd welcome a conversation about how this experience fits what you're building. Happy to send examples of my test plans or automation approach."

What not to write

• "I am a passionate and dedicated professional" — everyone writes this
• A summary of your CV — they have it already
• A full page — it won't be read
• Generic content not specific to this role — it signals low effort
